2 Killed In Avon Crash After High-Speed Chase

AVON (CBS) - Two people are dead and three others in critical condition after a high-speed chase ended in a crash in Avon early Monday morning.

Avon Police Chef David Martineau told reporters the chase began in Brockton around 3 a.m. after the driver refused to stop for police.

"Preliminary investigation indicates that a Brockton Police Officer's attention was drawn to a motor vehicle sounding its horn in a neighborhood. The car is believed to have fled the area rather than interact with police," Norfolk District Attorney spokesman David Traub said in a statement.

The pursuit ended when the Nissan sedan slammed into a utility pole on West Main Street in Avon.

The impact tore the car apart and left the pole hanging dangerously low over the road.

Martineau said one man and one woman were killed. They have been identified as Matthew Andrade and Denise Moreira, both 21 and of Brockton.

The driver survived.  He and two women were rushed to Brockton hospital in critical condition, but are expected to survive.

According to WBZ-TV's Susie Steimle, the survivors have spinal injuries and could possibly lose limbs.

No charges have been filed.
