2-Alarm Fire Damages Lowell Construction Building

LOWELL (CBS) - A two-alarm fire damaged a Lowell construction building on Saturday, officials say.

The headquarters for RSG Contracting on Stedman Street was badly damaged in the blaze that broke out around 2:30 p.m.

The heavy equipment and tools inside were likely lost as well.

No one was inside the building at the time of the fire.

A firefighter suffered heat exhaustion and was taken to an hospital.

The owner of the building says the building is a total loss.

"I was notified by one of my neighbors," said Stephen Guerette. "I was at a relative's house for a family function and I got a phone call by a neighbor saying the building was burning down and to get over here right away."

Deputy fire chief Jeff Winward says investigators have not been able to enter the building because they are concerned about the walls coming down.

"We're fighting it from the exterior now and putting out the hot spots," he said, adding that they have not begun the investigation.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

No additional details were immediately available.
