Police: 13-Year-Old Boy Tried To Run Down Officers Before Crashing Stolen SUV
BOSTON (CBS) – A 13-year-old boy was ordered held on $100,000 bail Thursday, a day after police say he drove a stolen SUV for nearly 30 miles and tried to run down officers before he crashed in Roxbury.
A 2011 Chevy Tahoe was reported stolen in Foxboro Wednesday evening and a short time later State Police spotted it on Interstate 93 north in Boston. A trooper tried to pull it over, but the driver didn't stop and got off the Southeast Expressway at Exit 16.
"The pursuit was terminated as the suspect vehicle entered a densely populated area," State Police spokesman Dave Procopio said in a statement.
But Boston Police picked up the chase and that's when the boy drove toward three officers, according to Renee Nadeau Algarin, a spokesperson for the Suffolk District Attorney's Office.
"Those officers were able to jump out of the vehicle's path and were not struck," she said in a statement.
The SUV went on to Melnea Cass Boulevard in Roxbury, where it crashed into another vehicle.
The boy ran off, but a Transit Police K-9 unit tracked him down in an industrial area on Reading Street.
He was taken to the State Police Barracks in South Boston, where he was booked.
The teen was arraigned Thursday morning in Boston Juvenile Court on charges of receiving a stolen motor vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident causing property damage, trespassing, unlicensed operation, negligent operation, failure to stop for police, and three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon.
The boy is due back in court April 14.
