Woman Gets 5 Years For Texting In Fatal Crash
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- A western Maryland woman who prosecutors say was texting while driving when she hit and killed a bicyclist has been sentenced to five years in prison.
Twenty-four-year-old Nadine Rager of Hagerstown pleaded guilty Monday to negligent manslaughter by vehicle. In addition to the prison term, Washington County Circuit Court Judge M. Kenneth Long Jr. ordered Rager to pay nearly $2,000 in restitution to the family of 47-year-old John Bushman Sr.
Bushman, a forklift operator, was killed Jan. 29 while riding his bicycle along West Washington Street. Prosecutors say Rager had been texting and looked away from the road when the crash occurred, The Herald Mail of Hagerstown reports.
Ashley Bushman, one of John Bushman's daughters, said in court that her father had bought a bike to commute to work.
