Woman, 19, Gets Probation In BB Shooting Of School Athlete
FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- A 19-year-old white woman has been sentenced to a year of supervised probation for shooting a black high school athlete with a BB gun in an incident police initially called a hate crime.
A Frederick County prosecutor said Tuesday the victim doesn't believe racial animosity was behind the assault.
Kristen Myers of Thurmont was charged in April with two counts of second-degree assault and two counts of reckless endangerment. Police said she shot two male black track team members running through town after yelling a racial slur that one of the victims said was an accepted form of bantering.
Myers pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree assault in a plea deal in June. She was required to write an essay and do 100 hours of community service.
