Winter Storm Postpones Games In Northeast
BALTIMORE (AP)--A winter storm that continued to wreak havoc in the South and Northeast Thursday has forced the cancellation of sporting events for the second straight day.
Due to hazardous weather conditions, a pair of men's basketball games featuring Top 25 teams were postponed -- No. 13 Louisville at Temple, and No. 23 SMU at Rutgers. Both games have been rescheduled for Friday night. Game times have not yet been announced.
Other Division I men's games scheduled for Thursday night that have been postponed include: Charleston Southern at High Point, Bryant at Mount St. Mary's, Central Connecticut State at St. Francis, Wagner at Farleigh Dickinson, Northern Kentucky at Kennesaw State and Western Carolina at Chattanooga.
Due to snow in the Baltimore and Washington D.C. markets, live racing at Laurel Park was cancelled for Thursday. It's the third cancellation of the year at the central Maryland track.
The winter storm that has affected the South moved up the country's East coast on Wednesday night.
In Baltimore, residents awoke to 15 inches of snow. Washington, D.C., had nearly a foot of snow forcing the city's two main airports to be closed. Philadelphia has 9 inches of snow and still counting.
In Chapel Hill, N.C., snow continued to fall and the Tar Heels' three-game baseball series with College of Charleston starting Friday was postponed.
That comes a day after snow and ice forced the postponement of the rivalry men's basketball game between No. 8 Duke and North Carolina. That game has been rescheduled for Feb. 20.
Officials at Clemson pushed up the school's women's basketball game Thursday against No. 10 North Carolina State 3 1/2 hours to 3 p.m.
The women's game between No. 2 Notre Dame and Boston College is expected to be played tonight at 6 p.m.
In Greenville, S.C., practice for the College All-Star Bowl game featuring many of the nation's top NFL prospects was moved back on Thursday but the game is expected to go on as scheduled Friday night at Furman's Paladin Stadium.
No cancellations are expected in the NBA where only two games are on the slate -- in Chicago and Los Angeles. There are no NHL games scheduled this week because of the Sochi Olympics.
