Winter Storm Dumps Almost 2 Feet Of Snow In Westminster

WESTMINSTER, Md. (WJZ) — The winter storm brought lots of snow to Carroll County.

Rochelle Ritchie explains Westminster saw some of the heaviest of the day.

It was a treacherous commute into Westminster Thursday morning, as roads compacted with snow give plows a run for their money.

"The plows are just having a challenge keeping up with the amount of snow," said one person.

It's sending drivers spinning out of control.

"Didn't get the grip 100 percent on all four wheels and just started spinning and I couldn't stop it anymore," another driver said.

Nineteen inches of snow fell across Carroll County in less than 24 hours. It's the most snow across Maryland counted so far.

"I've never seen anything like this. This is my first year in Westminster, so it's a lot worse than what I'm used to," one resident said.

Many are now digging themselves out of their own homes. Michael Wise started his dig for freedom around 6 a.m. and says he has well over a foot of snow in his long driveway.

"It's a mess," he said.

As crews work to clear roads, others are simply trying to make room on the sidewalk.

Getting the sidewalks clear is extremely important since a lot of people will not be able to drive. But snow on the sidewalk is still pretty deep, so plows have a lot of work ahead of them.

But once clear, pedestrians have another winter threat--ice.

"It gets worse. As you take it down to bare asphalt and concrete, it gets worse. It gets much worse," one man said.

WJZ photographer Eric Scott found out after slipping and falling during our shoot.

Carroll County crews say they used 70 to 100 plows to get the main roads clear.

While the main roads are clear, side roads still remain covered in heavy snow.
