Black Ice Making For Dangerous Roads, Sidewalks

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- You can barely see it, but the moment you feel black ice, it may be too little too late.

"It's treacherous. I have a 4x4 truck and I just tried to come up the road and actually went backwards," one Baltimore resident told WJZ.

A wintry mix of freezing rain and sleet is creating an invisible danger across much of Maryland. Many roads and sidewalks have been covered in black ice.

"It's all black ice. You really can't tell what's safe and what isn't, so you caught me scooting down the street," said Annie Adoryan of Baltimore.

The icy conditions also made for slippery sidewalks.

"I actually already fell on the ice. It's hard because you can't really see it at all," one woman in Towson told WJZ.

WJZ's Ava-joye Burnett demonstrated how slippery on sidewalk in Towson was Monday night.

Schools dismissed hours early Monday, and several delays and closings were announced Monday evening.

As the thermostat rises, the air temperature will climb above 32 degrees, but the ground may still be well below freezing.

Salt trucks loaded up Monday night in preparation for the morning rush while residents helped neighbors with laying down salt on untreated sidewalks.
