Winter Weather Caused Thanksgiving Travel Delays

BALTIMORE (WJZ) --- The weather impacted the hundreds of thousands of Marylanders trying to travel to their Thanksgiving destination.

Meghan McCorkell kept an eye on the impact the weather is having on holiday travel.

With the snow in the forecast, it appears a lot of travelers planned ahead and left early.

They're headed to different places.

"I'm going to Violet, New Jersey," said one.

"Myrtle Beach, South Carolina," said another.

"Philadelphia from Maryland," said a third.

But to get to Grandma's house, you had to get through the rain/snow mix that poured down on drivers on what's considered the busiest travel day of the year.

"Here and there traffic. It will be smooth for a while, then it will pick up. Then it starts snowing heavy. Then it stops," said Candace McCorvey.

Wind warnings on the Bay Bridge led to massive backups stretching for seven miles at one point. State Highway crews are keeping an eye out for changing conditions.

"We are concerned about refreeze. We will have some crews out patrolling and monitoring in case we do have a drastic drop in temperatures," said Kellie Boulware, State Highway Administration.

And it's not just the roads feeling the impact of the winter weather. The snow caused some flight delays out of BWI Marshall Airport.

"Just too many people going too many different places," said one.

Travelers planned ahead to avoid the crowds.

"Come early, try to beat the traffic," one said. "Try to get home early."

Extra crews were called in to de-ice planes to get passengers off the ground.

Despite all the headaches that come with holiday travel...

"Seeing the look on my mother and my father's face seeing me home for Thanksgiving, that makes it all worth it," said one traveler.

Those delays at BWI stretched into the night. The good news: we did not see many cancellations.

Forty-six million people are expected to travel this holiday weekend.
