WATCH: 15-Year-Old Michael Phelps Talks About His Goal Of Winning One Olympic Gold Medal
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Once upon a time, Michael Phelps was still a teenage boy, about to turn 16 and thinking about getting his learner's permit.
Granted, he was already a world record holder and Olympic athlete at that point, though he hadn't won any medals yet.
(Of course, as those of us living in 2016 know, Phelps has been to five Olympic games and has won 21 Olympic gold medals as of Tuesday night. He is the most decorated Olympic athlete of all time, and he still has more events to compete in in Rio.)
We pulled the above June 2001 interview from our vault. It was conducted the year after Phelps's first Olympic games in Sydney, and about a month before that year's World Aquatics Championships. WJZ also spoke with Phelps's coach, Bob Bowman.
In it, they talk about Phelps's training regiment and his goals of winning an Olympic gold medal and competing in more than one Olympic event in the 2004 Athens games. (HA! Little do they know!)
