Volunteers Cleanup West Baltimore School For Day Of Service Initiative

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—The Maryland Department of the Environment has partnered with a West Baltimore elementary school in a day of service event to beautify the school building and grounds ahead of the upcoming school year.

Mike Schuh has more on the story.

It looked like the 300 kids at Steuart Hill Academic Academy in West Baltimore were going to return to mess, but that's before state volunteers showed up, kneeled down, and picked up.

The school cleanup is all part of Governor Hogan's "Maryland Unites: Day of Service".

"I've done a few over the years and it always makes you feel good when you can," said Cheryl Reilly.

Cheryl is joined by more than a dozen colleagues from the Maryland Department of the Environment.

"I enjoy it. It's volunteerism, it's something that I enjoy doing so I'm happy the state fives us the opportunity," said Tara Williams.

Its estimated this summer that 14,000 volunteers in the Mid-Atlantic states spent mornings just like this.

Steuart Hill Academy is just 10 blocks from the MDE.

Tanya Lipscomb, the school's principal gave back a vacation day on Wednesday to help the volunteers at her school

She  says she can't wait for her students to arrive at school and see how good it looks!
