Just South Of Maryland, Primary Voters Head To Polls

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WJZ) -- Just south of Maryland, a large voter turnout is reported in Virginia.

Marcus Washington with more on what voters are hoping to see in their next president.

It's Super Tuesday, which led WJZ just over the Maryland state line to Alexandria, Virginia.

Super Tuesday is the biggest voting day of the year leading up to the general election.

"In the past, every vote has counted in many elections, and I want my vote to count," said Leslie Chernikoff-Berman, voter.

By noon this Super Tuesday, nearly 900 people voted at the Lee Center in Alexandria--that's roughly 16 percent of the voters assigned to vote at the polling site.

"Just with the Democrats alone, we've exceeded. The number of Democrats that we had voting in last June's primary was 406. So far today, we've already had 442 Democrats vote," said Robert Hardiman, poll site chief officer.

When it comes to picking a candidate, voters know what they want to see in their next president.

"Confidence. The world is difficult, lot of issues in America and I want someone to bring us together," said Grace Crosley, voter.

"I want to see one that can work across the aisles, whether they're Republican or Democrat," said Andrew McCarthy, voter. "I think the stubbornness we see from, whether it's the Tea Party, GOP and even some of the Democrats, I think we need a president that can continue to work across the aisle."

And for some, Tuesday is about more than policy and politics.

"I remember my great-great grandmother couldn't vote. And when she could vote, she was so happy to tell all of us, our whole family, whatever you do--vote," said voter John Taylor.
