Under Armour Announces Distribution Facility At Sparrows Point

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A new 1.3 million-square-foot Under Armour warehouse and distribution facility will be opening as part of the redevelopment of Sparrows Point, the Baltimore County government announced Tuesday morning.

The company's global headquarters is already located in Baltimore City, and it projects that it will employ another 1,000 workers from the area once the new facility is up and running.

Historically, the Sparrows Point peninsula was known as the home of the local Bethlehem Steel mill. In 2012, the mill was shut down after then-owner RG Steel filed for bankruptcy.

In early 2015, the main blast furnace was demolished, a somber event for many who were still mourning the local jobs that disappeared when the mill closed down.

Already this year, the Sparrows Point Terminal was renamed Tradepoint Atlantic and a Pasha Automotive terminal arrived on the peninsula.

Local leaders have made it clear that they want the area to be a bustling commerce hub again someday, and the Under Armour announcement is the latest step in revitalizing the former industrial site that employed thousands.

"Our vision for Sparrows Point is to attract world-class companies that want to take advantage of Baltimore's deep talent pool, prime mid-Atlantic location and integrated transportation network," says County Executive Kevin Kamenetz. "We're well on our way to fulfilling that vision and bringing 10,000 jobs back to Sparrows Point."

The UA facility is expected to open in the summer of 2018.

"Our fourth distribution house will be a top-notch service engine for our e-commerce business to deliver the right product, to the right place at the right time to our growing consumer base and athletes around the world," said Under Armour CEO and Founder Kevin Plank. "We are pleased to collaborate with Baltimore County and the State to create economic and job opportunities for the greater Baltimore community and Maryland as a whole."
