Umpire Stands Behind Call To Eject Gausman From The Game

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The tense series between the Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox continued last night when starting pitcher Kevin Gausman was tossed from the game for throwing a curveball that hit Xander Bogaerts in the hip.

Gausman spoke with MASN Sports after the game saying his ejection was "total bush league" and how [the umpires] handled the situation was "a complete joke."

Umpire Sam Holbrook gave this statement after the game:

"Given the situation and the tension between the two clubs, and all the stuff that's gone over the past few weeks, we're all on high alert with anything. I know that the ball was a curveball, but it hit him square in the back and just making a split decision at that point right there. There needs to be an end to this stuff, and I felt like an ejection was the right thing to do at that time, and that's what we did. Thankfully, we didn't have any more problems the rest of the game."

Gausman was soon joined by Orioles center fielder Adam Jones in the clubhouse when he was also tossed by Holbrook after arguing a strike call in the fifth inning.

The four-game series ends tonight and the two teams do not meet again until the Red Sox come to Baltimore June 1-4.
