Travis Thomas: Philosophy & Nutrition For The Elite Athlete

Many of you know, I work on the TV side of things as well as radio, down I-95 a bit, in DC.

Recently, I did a story on a local Boxer absolutely killin' it right now. WBC Featherweight Champion of the World Gary Russell Jr.

While I was gathering my interviews and footage for the story, I met Gary's nutritionist, Asar Bey. He's a natural herbal medicine man and nutritionist. Asar instantly made an impression on me with his insightfulness and outside of the box philosophy. Asar provides nutrition and holistic medicines to many athletes, particularly fighters. For me, I have always found it fascinating that fighters are constantly asked to gain, maintain, or cut weight, all the while being in excellent condition for the sport.

I asked Asar some of his trade secrets and some of his theories as to why he believes so strongly in his teachings and methods. Aside from being so knowledgeable in nutrition and medicines, Asar is also a community activist. He believes that certain foods can be attributed to some of the behaviors of young people, particularly in the African American communities.
