Towson Gets New Bike Path
TOWSON, Md. (WJZ) -- Cyclists, listen up. If you are looking for a new urban route, head to Towson.
Tracey Leong explains how it is connecting more than just bikers.
Officials and cyclists are hoping the Towson Bike Beltway promotes a greener and healthier community.
City and county leaders are alongside bicyclists celebrating a new bike route.
"Such a great alternative to driving a car," said County Executive Kevin Kamenetz.
The loop not only improves conditions for cyclists but motorists and pedestrians, as well.
"Traffic speeds dropped. People were out there walking more; much more bikeable for people around the community and people who were against it are now for it," said Nate Evans, an executive with Bike Maryland.
This 4.3 mile loops go around the center of town, giving cyclists easier access to markets, schools and shopping centers.
"Before, I was afraid to go biking around Towson because there were no bike lanes so now that there is a bike loop, I am more likely to use my bike to go on errands," said Roland Oehme.
The bike loop was spearheaded by Fifth District Councilman David Marks, who worked collaboratively with the county to ensure the success of the project.
"Make sure traffic is not impacted, there are proper drainage and markings and road improvements to make sure the bicyclists are safe," Kamenetz said.
Kamenetz and dozens of cyclists took a spin around town on the new route.
Many are also in support of the health benefits for their city which, according to experts, can reduce your risk for Type 2 Diabetes, improve mental health and mood, as well as increase your chances of living longer.
This $20,000 route is the most extensive bike improvement project for the county.
The goal is to extend the route to east and west Towson and then the rest of the county.
