Water Still Off In Baltimore City, County

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Thousands of Baltimore-area homes and businesses went 24 hours without water. Monday night's emergency repairs led to more problems for Baltimore's water system---and residents have had enough. Water was restored briefly Tuesday evening but a leak in a 10-inch main have led to more problems.

Christie Ileto has the latest update on repairs.

It's the first sign for Cheryl Pahl that water is coming back.

"Once you go without, you're like, `Oh my God, it's the end of the world,'" she said.

Pahl is one of 4,000 addresses weathering the last 24 hours without water.

A break in a 16-inch water line was discovered early Tuesday morning, just as Public Works was finishing emergency repairs to two broken valves. A hundred feet of piping was damaged.

"When the line was charged back up, the water line broke," said Kurt Kocher, DPW.

Residents say the pipeline there has been plagued with problems, especially this past winter---it was the source of several water main breaks.

"There's always a leak at Falls and Lake Avenue. All winter long, it seems there's always a leak there," said one resident, Ms. Payne.

Four days ago, crews were making repairs at the same intersection---and those chronic problems cost.

"We have had to shut down early and we don't have as much business," said one worker.

Businesses and residents braced the last 24 hours in humidity.

"I'll be glad when it's done with," said Ms. Payne.

Hoping Tuesday's repairs will fix the problem this time.

Residents may still have discolored water once service is back. If so, they are asked to open a tap in the lowest level of their home and run the water until it's clear.
