The Excitement Heightens As The Lady Terps Land In The Final Four
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WJZ)—For the first time in years, the Terps' women's basketball team is heading to the Final Four after a heart-stopping win over Louisville.
Gigi Barnett is with the Terps and the students as they celebrate.
Fans say it's been a long time coming: eight years to be exact. Now Maryland is itching for another championship.
A missed shot by Louisville sent Maryland's women's basketball team to the Final Four.
Less than 24 hours after the win, the celebration continues from the court to campus.
"It just gives us energy," said Alyssa Thomas, star Maryland player. "We have people behind us, supporting us. It feels good to know that our campus is behind us."
Pieces of the net are still tied to the players' caps.
"What's so special about us winning was that we did it on their court. We did it on their floor in front of their fans. We cut down their nets," said Brene' Moseley, Maryland player.
"That game last night was so stressful," said Cody Jarboe, Maryland student.
Jarboe says the Lady Terps have won him over.
"I've been to all the women's games this year. I got invested in the team, watching them so much. I enjoyed watching them more than the men this year," Jarboe said.
The last time Maryland made it this far was back in 2006. That year, Maryland won it all. The university wants that feeling back.
"I feel like everybody underestimates us, so I kinda want to see us win," said Taylor Roberta, Maryland student.
The players, well, they want it too.
"We know how many people are supporting us and are behind us. We're not just playing for ourselves, we're playing for the people that are fighting for us back home," Moseley said.
With just two games left, the university has already arranged for a mass viewing with more than 500 students at the Student Union building.
Notre Dame is undefeated. If Maryland beats them, they will play Stanford or undefeated UConn for the championship.
