Technology Advisor Equips Executives With Essential Industry Knowledge

Dave Hartman, President and Founder of Hartman Executive Advisors, noticed the increasing technological demands and developments within small and mid-market businesses some time ago. He also realized that CEOs and presidents were generally intimidated by technology, and didn't have an independent advisor to navigate them through the sometimes-tricky waters of technology decision-making. That's why he started his company of independent, trusted advisors for business professionals seeking easier, more comprehensive industry technology knowledge.

Hartman earned a bachelor's degree from the College of the Holy Cross and a Master of Business Administration degree from Embry-Riddle University. Prior to taking on a career in technology, he was an aviator in the United States Navy.

How long have you been working in this field?

"I have been in the technology industry for almost 20 years. I began my technology career near the end of my naval service, and continued it with Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) as a management consultant. Prior to beginning my technology career, I was an aviator with the United States Navy for nine years."

What are the responsibilities of your current role?

"As president, I lead a team of 35 professionals who serve clients across a variety of industries, including healthcare, education, nonprofit, construction and manufacturing. Our goal at Hartman is to bring independent, strategic thinking about technology to our clients and help them integrate the necessary tools, systems and resources into their overall business strategy."

What is your favorite part about your daily duties?

"I have the opportunity every day to work directly with CEOs and others in the C-suite to really make a difference in their organizations and have an impact at the strategic level. It's a great feeling, and one that not only I, but everyone at Hartman gets to experience on a daily basis."

How has your education and training prepared you for your current role?

"Formal education aside, I often refer to my years at Anderson and as a naval officer as being my second master's degree.  Almost everything I know about managing and leading people was born out of my early career at Andersen and as a naval officer. These experiences early in my career instilled in me the qualities of responsibility, perseverance and teamwork."

What do you do to continue your education and training?

"I stay current by reading industry news, attending executive seminars and participating in a CEO peer advisory group, which I believe is critical to leading a company in today's complex business environment."

Do you have any advice for others looking to enter this field?

"For those considering the technology field, the biggest mistake one can make is focusing entirely on the 'techy' stuff and ignoring the business side of the equation. Developing a strong business background will help you see the big picture and will make you a stronger technology professional because you'll be able to add value at a more strategic level."
