Suspect Arrested After Attempted ATM Robbery In West Baltimore
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Another attempted ATM theft.
"It's just outrageous," said one person.
This time at a local corner store in Northwest Baltimore.
"I was mad for real like y'all messing up our store," said one resident.
"You see, I mean if you look at it," said a store employee.
The employee of Aden Deli & Grocery on the 2300 block of Orem Ave. stood outside the front of the building as crews worked to replace the damage.
"I mean it not only happen here, but it happens everywhere. You know you look at it, basically, people are struggling man," said the store employee.
Around 6 Sunday morning, Baltimore police say officers responded to a burglary here and arrested a 17-year-old suspect shortly after they saw the teen leave the business.
Detectives say a van was used to smash through the front window in an attempt to remove the ATM from inside.
"I just think it's crazy because everyone knows Chico like if you live around here, that's our store for real. You don't mess with Chico," said one resident.
Neighbors believe whoever is responsible does not live in the area.
"You can tell it ain't nobody from around here because the atm has been down out of order for like a whole week," said one resident.
This comes on the heels of a string of similar ATM thefts in Baltimore in recent weeks, many without arrests.
"They taxing on everything. Everythings going up, it's a pandemic you know, they turned it into bandemic," said one resident.
Baltimore's police commissioner said an initiative is now underway to stop these ATM thefts, with a detective in every district working exclusively on such cases.
In the meantime, the staff at Aden Deli and Grocery are picking up the pieces and thankful for an arrest.
"I just hope he just gets things running again. I mean this is our community you know," said one resident.
Police say the 17-year-old suspect is charged with commercial burglary and other related offenses.
