Study: 47 Percent Of Kindergartners Ready For Curriculum
BALTIMORE (AP) -- State officials say less than half of Maryland's kindergartners are ready to tackle the Common Core curriculum that's being rolled out in schools.
WJZ media partner The Baltimore Sun reports the Common Core statistics were released Tuesday. Of the students enrolled in kindergarten, 47 percent of the students demonstrated knowledge in academic subjects such as language, literacy and math and developmental skills in areas such as physical well-being and social foundations.
The Common Core, adopted in 45 states, was introduced in Maryland in pre-kindergarten three years ago.
Last year, 83 percent of kindergartners were deemed "fully ready" to learn. Officials say the drop was based on the new standards, which the state revised last year to assess the ability of 4 and 5-year-olds.
More than 67,000 Maryland students were tested.
