Steve Davis: Terps Chances At Post-Season Run
Maryland opens up post-season play Friday in the Big Ten quarterfinals after receiving a double-bye. They're the hottest team in the Big Ten, having won 7 in a row. They'll be taking on the winner of the 7/10 seed game between Northwestern and Indiana that takes place on Thursday.
I don't think a lot hinges on the Big Ten tournament. Even if they lose their first round game, which I doubt they will, I think they are a 3 seed in the tournament. If they win the Big Ten tourney, which will be tough, 3 wins in 3 days, they could and probably should move up to a 2 seed, but there's no guarantees.
Either way, I think Maryland is poised to make a run at least to the Sweet 16. Dez Wells is playing at a very high level, Melo Trimble is unflappable as a freshman, Jake Layman can hurt teams from inside and outside, and they have good depth.
I am not saying Maryland is a Final Four team, but I think they could get there. I hope they avoid Kentucky until the very end, but other than that, there isn't a team in the country that the Terps can't beat on any given day.
