Steve Davis: My Two Cents On Caitlyn Jenner
This is such a hard topic to comment on, particularly in today's day and age of political correctness. That said, I don't feel particularly inclined to say anything politically incorrect.
I remember Bruce Jenner as the greatest athlete in the world, the guy we all wanted to be. In the last ten years, I have tuned out Jenner because I thought the whole Keeping Up with the Kardashians act diminished his legacy. Plus, I didn't care.
Now, ESPN is honoring Jenner with the ESPY for the Arthur Ashe Courage Award in July. Apparently, that will be her first public appearance. I have mixed feelings about whether this is really the kind of award a sports entity should honor with a courage award. That said, I think it takes a lot of courage to do what Jenner is doing.
To the people that say it's a publicity stunt and money grab, I would say that's pretty narrow-minded. I can't imagine doing all this, when Jenner has plenty of money as it is, going through this kind of public scrutiny, particularly when you have children, for attention. Hey, considering the Kardashian connection, maybe I'm naive, since I have barely seen any of the show.
I can't imagine being that kind of a tortured soul. ESPN certainly has taken on social issues at the ESPYs, and I'm okay with that.
To the people that have called and texted the show saying they're still going to call Jenner "Bruce" and a "he", I would say that when you call or text the show, you tell us your name and that's what we call you. If Jenner wants to be Caitlyn and a woman, why do any of us care? Because it makes you feel uncomfortable? Get over it.
