Sources: Mother Of Freddie Gray Tries To Take Her Own Life

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- WJZ has learned that the mother of Freddie Gray has attempted suicide.

Rick Ritter has more on what happened.

WJZ has confirmed with multiple sources that Gloria Darden, the mother of Freddie Gray, tried to take her own life late Wednesday night.

The call came in around 9:35 p.m. Wednesday for a person needing medical attention in North Baltimore.

Sources tell WJZ that's where Gloria Darden, the mother of Freddie Gray, attempted suicide and sustained superficial wounds.

Neighbors watched as first responders arrived on scene.

"I seen the police and ambulance right there. They were taking the lady out and putting her on the stretcher bed," said Diana Bruce, North Baltimore.

Sources say Gray's mother was taken from that North Baltimore neighborhood to a nearby hospital, where no surgery or stitches were needed.

Billy Murphy, the lawyer for the Gray family, released a statement Thursday night, saying in part: "…she is still mourning the loss of her son. The family asks that you continue to pray for her and for them."

Freddie Gray, 25, was arrested back on April 12. He was critically injured when taken into police custody and died a week later, triggering unrest throughout the city.

While grieving, Gray's mother wanted nothing but peace.

"I want you to get justice for my son, but don't do it like this here," she said.

Just weeks ago, the city of Baltimore awarded Gray's family $6.4 million to settle civil claims.

"Money won't bring back Freddie Gray," Murphy said in September.

The six officers charged with Gray's death will be tried separately over the course of the next five months. The first trial is slated for November 30.

Sources say Gray's mother is currently undergoing a psychiatric evaluation.
