Police Search For Suspects In McDaniel College Shooting That Put Campus On Lockdown

WESTMINSTER, Md. (WJZ) — A Maryland college goes on lockdown after shots were fired into a residence hall. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

But students tell Linh Bui they're still shaken up.

Some McDaniel College students were walking back from a local restaurant just before 3 a.m. Sunday when Westminster Police say four men tried to pick a fight. One suspect had a gun.

Police say the students went into Whiteford Hall on campus. Moments later, shots were fired through the lobby window.

"We've not had an incident of gunshots, so this is unfortunate for us here on what we consider a very safe campus," said Joyce Muller, McDaniel College.

Fortunately, no one was injured. Police searched for the suspects, but could not find them.

"It was really scary at first. Like, it's never good when there's a shooting. I'm just glad no one was hurt," freshman Caroline Savin said.

McDaniel College alerted students and went on lockdown for about three hours.

"It's good to know that our school's looking out for us and taking care of everything, but it is scary," freshman Maddie Moyer said. "Now we're probably going to take more precautions just knowing that this could happen at any moment."

Also early Sunday morning, police say three men tried to rob a student walking near campus. One suspect had a knife, but the student ran away and was not hurt.

"It just makes everyone nervous," Savin said.

It's unknown if the incidents are related. Both remain under investigation.

Anyone with information should call the Westminster Police Department at 410-848-4646.
