Shopkeepers Sentenced For $1.1M Food Stamp Fraud

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Two Baltimore shopkeepers have been sentenced to four years in prison for illegally redeeming food stamp benefits in exchange for cash.

Thirty-seven-year-old Abdulmalik Abdulla and 54-year-old Ahmed Mohssen were also ordered to pay restitution at sentencing Friday in federal court in Baltimore.

According to evidence presented at trial, Abdulla and Mohssen operated Sam's NY Grocery. Prosecutors say the two received federal payments for transactions in which they did not provide any food, but split the proceeds with food stamp recipients.
