Sentencing Set For Md. Woman In W.Va. Fraud Case
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- A Maryland woman faces up to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty in West Virginia to participating in a fraud scheme.
Sheray J. McKay of Suitland, Md., is scheduled to be sentenced June 5 in U.S. District Court in Charleston.
McKay, 21, pleaded guilty last week to conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin says in a news release that McKay and other individuals solicited money under false pretenses from about 16 senior citizens living in West Virginia and other states. McKay and the others posed as clergymen, lawyers or family members and made false claims, including saying they'd been in traffic accidents.
Goodwin says the scheme occurred in November 2012 and netted more than $60,000. The money was obtained through wire transfers.
