Saving Time & Lives: FBI Unveils New Child ID App
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- With summer around the corner, children will finally be out playing. But with that freedom, parents need to keep an eye on them.
Mary Bubala reports the FBI is making that job easier by putting a new tool in their hands.
Every parent wants to protect their children from danger. Each year thousands of children go missing, and that's why the FBI is turning to technology to help parents in an emergency.
The agency unveiled its new child ID app.
"We are hoping that parents will download this app and put information into it that would be pertinent to law enforcement if their child disappeared. That would be height, age and weight," said Amy Thoreson, FBI spokesperson.
The FBI says having this information loaded already saves precious time when a child is reported missing.
"Law enforcement needs that information quickly, so it can spread it quickly," said Thoreson.
The app also has links to 911 and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The FBI says the app works.
"We had a case in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where they loaded information into the app, and sent it out to law enforcement, and they were able to recover the child unharmed. So it does work," said Thoreson.
The app is free and available for Apple and Android devices.
