Rangers Learning Rescue Techniques At Catoctin Mountain Park
THURMONT, Md. (AP) -- National Park Service rangers are rigging up at Catoctin Mountain Park near Thurmont to learn how to rescue people in the mountains.
About 30 rangers and partner agency members are participating in five days of basic technical rescue training, starting Monday.
The park service says participants will learn basic rigging and rappelling techniques indoors. Then they'll practice outdoors in the Catoctin and Harpers Ferry national parks, and Pennsylvania's Michaux State Forest.
They'll even practice a nighttime rescue.
The park service says participants will carry heavy equipment over rugged terrain, and work in dangerous vertical locations.
