Still No Arrests After 2 Transgender Women Killed In Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Two murders in two months and still no arrests. The transgender community in Baltimore has been frightened since the death of Mia Henderson.

Marcus Washington reports a memorial service for Henderson brought more than remembering her life.

"She is a woman at the end of the day. Her name is Mia. Nothing less," said Lasaia Wade.

Mia Henderson, the second trans-woman murdered in Baltimore this summer, was remembered Saturday during a memorial service at the Spiritual Empowerment Center in Charles Village.

"We prayed for justice and we prayed that we'll always remember them and that we'll walk in their spirit and that love and kindness that they had," said Pastor O'Lou Moise.

One month since Henderson's death and more than two month since Kandy Hall's death in Northeast Baltimore, and still no arrests. Many people in the transgender community say they are scared and upset.

"As an open trans-woman, it's scary," said Lasaia Wade.

"Hearing about another trans-person being killed, of course that was very concerning to me," said Autumn Watkins.

Many attendees even raised concern that no police representation was present after requests were made.

"Commissioner Batts, we're just wondering--where are you?" said Monica Yorkman.

Saturday's memorial served as more than remembering a life taken, but also sharing reassurance that no one else is in this fight alone.

"Under divine guidance, we will create the appropriate plans to protect ourselves, to make sure that these women's lives were not in vain," Moise said.

Baltimore City Police say finding the killers of the victims, regardless of their lifestyle choices, is a high priority.

Anyone with information about the murders is urged to call Metro Crime Stoppers immediately.
