How has your education contributed to your career goals and your line of work? Please explain your work.
"I worked as a teacher at first. I saw that there were children in the classroom that were not being successful because of mental health problems. I decided to go back to school to get my Ph.D. to help children with mental health and behavioral health issues. Originally, I opened a public mental health clinic with four employees. I now have sites in Wicomico, Somerset and Talbot Counties, a Healthy Families Program and three school-based mental health programs with 95+ employees."
"I have written two books and an assessment to guide other professionals in helping youth that have difficulty being successful due to behavioral health problems. I also write articles, appear on radio and TV and lecture at conferences nationally and internationally on the topic of youth and family violence and trauma. I am a past president of the Maryland Psychological Association."
In your opinion, how important is community service to leadership?
"It is essential for all of us to provide community service. It rounds us out and teaches us. It is our community and we can help to make it better by contributing our talents."
As a leader, what advice do you have for others who like to follow a similar life path?
"Work hard. Find time for what you love. Help others. Be kind and honest."
