Possibly Rabid Raccoon Killed In String Of Related-Attacks
COLUMBIA, Md. (AP) -- A raccoon suspected of being rabid has been found and put to death in the third incident of its kind this month in the Washington region.
The Washington Post reports police say the Sunday incident occurred after residents complained about a possibly rabid raccoon on the loose in the Allview neighborhood in Columbia, including the Patuxent Branch Trail.
Police warned residents to call 911 if they spotted any raccoon that was staggering or acting erratically, and to notify other neighbors in the area.
Police say the raccoon that apparently prompted the complaints was located and put to death. It wasn't immediately clear whether it was carrying the rabies virus.
Two people were bitten by raccoons that tested positive for rabies in two separate incidents this month.
