Man shot, killed by Baltimore County police after they say he pointed gun at officers in Pikesville

Police investigate deadly shooting involving an officer near Pikesville gas station

BALTIMORE -- An investigation is underway after a Baltimore County police officer shot a man at a gas station Tuesday in Pikesville.

State investigators on Thursday identified the man as 20-year-old Sha-Kim Akil Webley of Windsor Mill. While the officers involved are usually also identified, investigators are not yet identifying the officers over "specific security concerns."

It happened just before noon on Tuesday. WJZ saw a large police presence at a BP gas station on Reisterstown Road and Milford Mill.

Police said it started as a domestic incident at a hotel several blocks away. The man walked to the gas station.

Police said he was armed.

"Officers located the suspect inside a nearby gas station at which time the suspect pointed his weapon at the officers. Officers were able to retreat outside the gas station where they declared a barricade," Baltimore County police said in a news release. "The suspect sustained life-threatening injuries after exiting the location and engaging officers."

"The police followed him into the gas station. He tried to go in the gas station and act like there's nothing going on—trying to act like he was buying stuff," said Ronald, a witness who declined to give his last name who lives near the gas station. "Police surrounded him and he came out the door and started shooting at them."

"How many shots did you hear?" Hellgren asked him. "I heard 15."

The door of the gas station shattered from the gunfire.

A bullet also struck the back window of a Baltimore County police cruiser.

The shooting was captured on a bystander's camera, and WJZ has seen that video.

It shows a man coming out of the gas station's front door with police outside. You hear the gunfire and see the suspect fall to the ground.

Dante works at the gas station and left seconds beforehand to get lunch.

"I just heard it. I seen the car pull up and police car pull up behind it," he said. "I saw him in a stretcher."

The Maryland Attorney General posted on social media the man had died. The person has not been named by authorities.

People we spoke to said a broad daylight shootout is rare here.

"It scared me. I have kids and live right behind that building," Ronald said. "The owner was in there. The workers were in there. He could have had them as hostages."

Baltimore County police said three officers fired their weapons. They were wearing cameras.

Independent investigators with the attorney general's office responded to the scene. They investigate all shootings involving law enforcement and will make the decision on when to release any video.
