Man shot and killed by police officers in Southwest Baltimore

BALTIMORE - A man was shot and killed by police officers Monday evening in Southwest Baltimore.

Officers were patrolling the area of N. Stricker Street around 9:15 p.m. when they saw a person believed to be armed, Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley said.

The man took off after he was engaged by the officers, who gave chase, police said, and when they stopped, there was a struggle and other officers fired shots. The unidentified man died at the scene.

Worley said three officers fired their weapons at the man who had shown "characteristics of an armed person." A gun was recovered at the scene police said.

"It was what we call characteristics of an armed person," Worley said. "Because the individuals who fired their weapons were the ones that saw that, they haven't given a statement yet, so that will be part of the investigation."

No officers were injured in the shooting.

The Baltimore Police Department is working with the Attorney General's Office to investigate.

"None of use wish to ever be here for a situation like this," Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said. "We are grateful there were no further injuries to our officers or other community members. we know this community will need to heal." 

Scott added that he wants people to think twice about resolving conflicts with guns.

"There's nothing good that's going to come out of it for you or your family," Scott said. "We have to have an understanding that there is a better way. Gunplay is not the way anyone has to go in the City of Baltimore."
