'Phelps Face' Trending After Swimmer Shows Off Terrifying Glare In Rio
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- As South African swimmer Chad le Clos shadow boxed in front of him in the on-deck room ahead of their 200m butterfly semifinal Monday night, Michael Phelps would've won gold, silver and bronze in the Olympic event of "being terrifying," if that were a real thing.
#PhelpsFace is now trending on Facebook and Twitter, and has become a full fledged meme.
Phelps, who is 31 years old and has -- as of Sunday's 400m men's freestyle relay -- 23 Olympic medals, was edged out by le Clos in the same event at the London Olympics.
In the 2004 and 2008 Olympics, Phelps won gold in the 200m butterfly, but in 2012 he had to settle for silver.
Phelps came out ahead of le Clos Monday night, though they were second and third overall, coming in just behind Hungary's Tamás Kenderesi.
The final in the 200m men's butterfly event will air tonight.
Phelps said he would retire after London, but reversed that decision soon afterwards and started training for Rio.
Since London, he also gave up alcohol after a 2014 drunk driving arrest, reconnected with his father, got engaged and recently became a father.
He now says he will retire after the Rio games.
