Child Dies In Southwest Baltimore Fire, Officials Say

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A child died in a fire Friday afternoon in Southwest Baltimore, the Baltimore Fire Department said.

Units responded around 6 p.m. to the 4700 block of Vancouver Road for the fire, where firefighters found a child between the age of 3 or 4 dead at the scene, a department spokesperson said.

The cause of the child's death is currently under investigation.

Neighbor Tracy Howard has lived in the neighborhood all her life--her children ride to school with the children from the house where the fire occurred--but she thought the family was moving a month ago.

"She was a single mom with two kids, but I thought she had moved so I don't know," Howard said. "She had just stopped working out at the airport and she was looking for another job."

A second neighbor said they saw a mother in a moving van with two young children.

"I saw a U-Haul van with three people coming out," the neighbor said. "I thought I saw two kids."

And another neighbor told WJZ they heard a fight from the house before the fire Friday, in which a woman kicked out a man because the didn't want him around her kids anymore.

The Baltimore Firefighters union, IAFF Local 734, tweeted that arson investigators were requested, but the Baltimore Fire Department said the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
