PECOTA Projected Orioles In Last Place, But They Currently Have Best Record In MLB

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Earlier this year PECOTA, which stands for Player Empirical Comparison and Optimization Test Algorithm, projected the Baltimore Orioles would place last in the American League East's MLB standings.

However, the team currently owns the best record in baseball.

Manager Buck Showalter says, "(There's a) lot of baseball to be played. So far, so good. We've played a tough part of the schedule, not that any part is easy up here."

Being the best in baseball could be contributed to some of the unexpected additions to the roster with players like Alec Asher, Richard Bleier, Vidal Nuno, Logan Verrett, and Gabriel Ynoa, who were all added from outside the organization since January.

The Orioles have been experiencing more than a few pitching changes as Zach Britton and Chris Tillman both have been on and off the disabled list. The team used 19 different pitchers over their first 30 games. By comparison, the division-winning 2014 Orioles used just 20 pitchers over the whole season.

Thanks to some outstanding pitching, the Orioles are on a six-game winning streak and are 22-10. PECOTA estimated the Orioles would lose 70 games in 2017.

All said, PECOTA did do pretty well in its 2016 forecast.
