Part of Baltimore's Northern Parkway closed over gas work

BALTIMORE -- Part of Northern Parkway in Baltimore was shut down early Friday morning over what was initially believed to have been a natural gas leak.

Northern Parkway at Springlake Way and at Bellona Avenue closed at 6:30 a.m., police said, and remained closed as of 8:30 a.m.

Authorities said the closure was over a possible gas leak, but BGE clarified that the "gas" customers smelled Friday was a residual smell after BGE crews added an odorant to the gas system Thursday.

"BGE crews are responding to odor calls from customers this morning and adding another substance to the system to suppress the residual odorant smell," the company said, stressing that there was not a gas leak.

Roads remained closed in the area as of 8 a.m. Friday

This is a developing story and will be updated.
