One Of Md.'s Smallest Schools A Finalist In 'Trees Rock' Contest
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) -- The stakes are high for one of the state's smallest schools. St. Martin's Lutheran School in Annapolis is in a nationwide race to win thousands of dollars in the "Trees Rock" contest by Scotties Tissue.
As Gigi Barnett explains, they need your support to win big.
Every student at St. Martin's Lutheran School in Annapolis knows something about trees. It's all documented in a video created by the school's eighth grade class, and it's just been named a top ten finalist in Scottie Tissue's "Trees Rock" contest.
"We knew that it was going to be very hard and we still did it and it's amazing to realize how far we got," said student Ava Tietje.
But the fun part is just starting. St. Martin's eighth grade class has only four students. That gives you an idea of how small the school really is. They're the brains behind the project.
If they win, they'll have to do a lot of math to decide how to spend the $10,000 prize. So, how did the girls come up with the idea?
"One kid, his name is Alex, and he goes, 'Well, they give us lettuce.' So apparently he thought the leaves on the tree were the lettuce that they grow and that's what he eats every day. So we had to switch," said student Rachel Edlich.
Now the girls are working hard like trees to get the word out to go online and vote for Maryland's only school in the contest.
"You like tell someone and then they tell more people. It kind of is like a tree cause it keeps branching out," said Tietje.
So, what is the eighth grade class going to do with all of that cash if they win? They're going to build a mini greenhouse or start an animal care program that teaches students sustainability and responsibility. The deadline to vote is Feb. 6.
Scotties will announce the winner of its "Trees Rock" contest on Feb. 15.
