Off-Duty Md. Officer Hit By Car Helping Stranded Drivers

GLEN BURNIE, Md. (AP) -- An off-duty Anne Arundel County Police officer was hit by a car after she stopped to help stranded drivers.

The Capital reports that the officer was hit on Route 100 in Glen Burnie on Saturday night.

Lt. Michael Brothers says the officer was either getting in or out of her car when she was hit. She was treated and released from a nearby hospital.

It's unclear whether snowy and icy roads played a factor in the crash. A short time afterward, a pileup involving about 10 cars happened on Route 100 in the Glen Burnie area. No one was hurt in the pileup, believed to be caused by slick conditions.

Dozens of accidents were reported throughout the county Saturday and Sunday amid sleet and freezing rain.
