New Poll Shows Ben Carson Tied With Donald Trump Among GOP Voters

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Ben Carson's campaign for president appears to be gaining momentum. A new poll released Monday has Carson tied for first place with Donald Trump, who has been running ahead of the pack all summer.

Pat Warren has more on what this might mean for Carson's campaign.

Politicians are fond of saying a poll is just a snapshot in time, but any time you're winning, it's a picture worth framing.

Ben Carson is gaining ground in Iowa.

"My wife always refers to me as a cutup," he said.

And now the world-renowned neurosurgeon may be cutting in on The Donald. Iowa caucus-goers polled have Carson tied with Donald Trump with 23% of the vote. That's quite a spike from early August, when Carson was running fifth behind Trump and Republican notables Bush, Walker and Huckabee. His popularity is climbing since the presidential debate on August 5.

"I'm the only one that separates Siamese twins, the only one to operate on babies while they're still in their mother's womb and the only one to take out half of a brain," Carson said. "Although you would think---if you go to Washington, you would think---someone beat me to it."

After the debate, he polled in a tie for third place with numbers steadily increasing to second place---and now a tie for first.

The poll shows Carson leading Trump among those who consider themselves very conservative, evangelical, Christians and women.

The same poll shows Democrat Bernie Sanders closing in on Hillary Clinton. Clinton has 37% of likely voters polled; Sanders is in second place with 30%.
