New Dash Cam Video Released Of Crash That Killed City Hall Employee

BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- Maryland State Police release dramatic new dash cam video of the crash outside City Hall that killed a longtime employee last year.

Denise Koch has more on the footage.

The footage comes from a Maryland State trooper's patrol car.

The video shows the trooper arrive on the scene after the accident occurred. According to police records,  the trooper was on his way to the Essex Barracks on Interstate 83 when a black Acura nearly hit him from behind.

That's when the trooper activated his rear lights to warn the driver to slow down. The Acura then sped off, eventually exiting downtown and crashing into a light pole at City Hall.

Moments later,  officers discover Matthew Hersl, 44, was under the wreckage.

Hersl later died.

The driver, Johnny Johnson, is now serving 11 years for vehicular homicide and possession of a controlled dangerous substance.

Police say he was going more than 115 miles per hour when his car crashed near Pleasant Street.

On Wednesday, friends and family gathered to honor Hersl one year after his death.
