Navy Midshipman Awarded Marshall Scholarship
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) --- Just three days away from the Army Navy football game and midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy are ready! But, Jessica Kartalija reports on how it isn't just about football for one midshipman.
Pomp, circumstance and school spirit. For Midshipman First Class, Andrea Howard, Saturday is a day of honor.
As commander of the 125-member drum and bugle corps, she will lead the performance at Saturday's game, but the excitement doesn't stop there. The 22-year-old was just awarded the Marshall Scholarship, a highly competitive academic scholarship that will send her overseas. She has big plans.
"Have a ton of fun and get a masters in the process," Howard said. "I am going to be studying nonproliferation international security at Kings College in London."
The Marshall Scholarship is awarded to 40 students each year. The program gives students an opportunity to study in the United Kingdom, strengthening British and America relations.
Howard will be busy. She wants to be a submariner, a position often filled by men.
"From what I hear it's one of the toughest jobs you can do in the Navy in terms of the schedule and getting qualified," Howard said. "Learning how to run a nuclear reactor especially coming in as a political science and Arabic double major, it's going to be a little bit of a transition trying to get into nuclear engineering."
The Army Navy game is bittersweet, as it's one of the last times she will be performing for the Naval Academy.
"It's been more than I've ever expected and I am so thankful for each of the experiences that I've had," Howard said.
Midshipman Howard was also a member of the gospel choir and a Trident scholar.
