Mother Pistol-Whipped While Holding 5-Week-Old Son During Robbery In Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Three suspects are in custody after they allegedly robbed a woman while she was holding her 5-week-old son in Federal Hill Tuesday afternoon.

According to police one suspect is a 19-year-old woman and the other is a juvenile. Both will be charged as adults.

Surveillance video showed three teenagers walking on Webster Street. A minute later, a woman walking on Heath Street appeared, carrying shopping bags and her 5-week-old son.

"They saw a woman who, first, would protect her child, and they took advantage of her vulnerability," Baltimore Police Detective Donny Moses said.

Police said video shows that two teenage girls -- one with a BB gun -- struggle to steal the woman's cell phone while a teenaged boy kept a lookout just out of the view.

"Just the fact he stood by and watched this happen, he was equally involved," Moses said. "He did not strike any blows, but he was equally responsible."

The incident happened in the 1700 block of Webster Street around 1:40 p.m. The woman was also allegedly pistol-whipped.

All of the suspects fled the location after the robbery, but officers later found them by the Inner Harbor after they were located by a police chopper. Police have not announced charges in this case.

The victim and her son received minor injuries and scratches. She declined medical treatment.

Neighbors called the incident "terrifying."

"I think it's terrifying and horrible," Samantha Redman said. "It's not something you want to think about happening in your own neighborhood."

Police also said that the woman's cell phone was recovered when arrests were made.
