Violence Continues Monday After 8 Killed In Baltimore Over Memorial Day Weekend
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- This Memorial Day weekend was violent in Baltimore City after at least 8 people were shot and killed and more than 5 others wounded.
In one case, police said 3 people were shot at the same scene Sunday night near Spaulding Avenue in Northwest Baltimore.
"It's a mess, pure mess. When I was coming up, we didn't have all these killings and stuff," one man told WJZ, as he stood near Spaulding Avenue.
Police said 2 of the 3 victims who died at that scene around 9 p.m. Sunday were shot in the head. One of them was 20-years-old.
"They don't care about nobody's life. Life nowadays it ain't worth nothing no more," another man told WJZ.
In another case on Sunday, a 17-year-old girl was shot in the head on North Denison Street. Police said she's in critical condition.
Authorities said that some people have been reluctant to work with investigators. That happened Monday morning on Frankford Avenue after a 24-year-old man was shot and refused to cooperate with medics or officers.
In an email released Monday morning, Baltimore City Police said there were 127 homicides by May 31, 2020, compared to at least 136 so far in 2021.
Mayor Brandon Scott said in a statement:
"The gun violence witnessed this weekend shows us that there are cowards among us who are willing to take a life, no matter how small or insignificant the beef. We must hold them accountable and rid our streets of the weapons they use to take our daughters and sons away from us."
Federal, State and Local officials recently joined forces in an attempt to stop gun crimes in Baltimore.
They announced additional funding for an initiative called 'Project Exile." Officials said more resources will be available to target repeat offenders and people committing gun crimes and charge them in federal court.
"I want to be very clear that when it comes to victim crimes in homicides and shootings, we have a very clear distinction in my office and the federal government; We are going to hold you to account," said Baltimore's State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby.
