BALTIMORE (WJZ)--As thousands continue to pick up the pieces after powerful Hurricane Matthew churned over the south, many animals, like the dozens in North Carolina need help finding new homes.
On Saturday, officials with the Maryland SPCA met staff in Virginia where they were able to bring seven dogs in Hurricane Mathew's path to Baltimore.
- 2 Rottweiler (females)
- 1 Hound mix (large)
- 1, 8 month Shepherd
- 1 pit mix- medium
- 1 Shepherd mix-medium
- 1 Corgi mix- heartworm positive dog
Like homes and businesses, animal shelters in North Carolina were badly damaged.
"All of the pets who came up north were already available for adoption before the hurricane and they are making space for the ones who want to be reunited with the ones who want to be reunited with the hurricane victims and survivors," said Nichole Miller, director with the Maryland SPCA.
The 7 "Baltimore" dogs were just some of the 86 filling up the shelter in Goldsborough, North Carolina.
"When we have the ability, we like to help communities who are in great need," Miller said. " The communities in North Carolina were in great need after Hurricane Matthew."
Miller says some of the the dogs need to be treated for minor illnesses before they can be adopted.
