Md. County Settles 2 Jail Suicide Lawsuits

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- Frederick County has settled two wrongful death lawsuits stemming from suicides of county jail inmates.

Defense attorney Daniel Karp and plaintiffs' attorney Peter Grenier said Friday that the civil cases filed last year in U.S. District Court in Baltimore were settled earlier this week. Neither side would disclose details of the settlements.

One case involved Valerie Ann Miller, who hanged herself with a bed sheet in October 2010. The other involved William John Hanlin, who hanged himself with a bed sheet in July 2010.

Both lawsuits alleged mismanagement of the jail.

A third case is still pending. It involves the death in November 2013 of Robert Justin Lihvarchik, who hanged himself with a shoelace in June 2009.

The county has denied the allegations.
