Md. Child Abuse Suspect Ordered Held Without Bond

ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) -- A Maryland prosecutor says a former Montgomery County teacher accused of sexually abusing 15 students once faked his own death to avoid being confronted by a victim.

The Washington Post reports that Lawrence W. Joynes was ordered held without bond Friday.

The 55-year-old Joynes, a former music teacher, has remained in custody since his arrest last year. Authorities have said videos and images of children were found on his computer and digital media.

In court Friday, a prosecutor told a judge that Joynes had once posted a fictitious death certificate on his personal website after one of his victims tried to confront him after she became an adult. Prosecutors say those actions show that Joynes is a flight risk.
