Matt Wieters Three-Run Homer Lifts Orioles Past Angels
Baltimore (WJZ) -- The Baltimore Orioles took care of business against the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday night thanks to a three-run homer from Matt Wieters in the top of the ninth.
For the majority of the game, Orioles SP Kevin Gausman found himself in an old fashioned pitching duel against Angels SP Matt Shoemaker.
Both pitchers kept batters at bay with impressive play from the mound. Neither pitcher gave up a run through 6 innings, but it was Gausman that would be the first to blink in the bottom of the seventh after a single by Angels 3B Yunel Escobar brought in a run. Kevin Gausman would finish the evening going 6 2/3 innings, giving up 8 hits, striking out 6 and allowing 1 earned run.
It would remain a one run game until the top of the ninth inning with two men on base and 2 outs already registered. Orioles catcher Matt Wieters struck a sinker into left center field to bring in 3 runs and effectively seal the game and the series.
Baltimore will go for the sweep on Sunday night against the Angels as Ubaldo Jimenez (2-4 5.60) goes up against Jered Weaver (3-3 5.76).
