Maryland Shelter Hosts Dogs From South Carolina

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — A Maryland animal shelter has taken in dogs from South Carolina so shelters there could make space for pets that might get lost or stranded during Hurricane Matthew.

The Humane Society of the United States evacuated 57 dogs from the Charleston Animal Society in South Carolina ahead of the storm. The animals arrived at the organization's Maryland headquarters on Thursday.

The SPCA of Anne Arundel County of Annapolis was one of a handful of shelters that agreed to take in the dogs. They took in six dogs. They are expected to be ready for adoption in the coming days. Shelters in Pennsylvania, New York and Washington also agreed to help out.
